Ministry of the Word: Serving the Church by proclaiming the Gospel and other parts of the Liturgy that are not the Consecration of the Eucharist or the giving of benedictions/blessings. Deacons preach homilies/sermons, and teach the Faith anywhere and always. TACA always welcomes teachers and givers of glowing sermons, upright men who exemplify the doing of the Word (Acts 1:22).
Ministry of the Liturgy & Sacraments: Assisting priests at the altar, administering Baptism (by pastoral permission or in an emergency), witnessing marriages, and presiding at wakes and funeral services (although only priests/bishops can execute a Eucharistic Liturgy).
Ministry of Charity: Attending to the human, physical, and spiritual needs of the poor, the marginalized, and the broader community, deacons can lead twofold actions to relieve Poverty of the Body or Soul, while confessing to the needy that all true gifts, in-kind and spiritual, commute to the body and heart through the Blood of Christ.
BECOMING A DEACON FOR KEEPS
The Permanent Diaconate, a biblical office, is the first rank of ordained incardinated ministry. It can be the transitional office from which your Priesthood and later your Bishopric would later instantiate. All three hierarchical titles are permanent. They are also bi-vocational (you can work in a paying career while serving). All three are members of the Clergy, who balance their ministry with secular jobs and married life. The word “diaconate” comes from the Greek word diakonia, which translates to “service” or “servant.” Click the blue button below to read the biblical origins of the Diaconate. In training for the Diaconate, the candidate learns the Three-fold Ministry: 1) Teaching and Preaching; 2) Liturgical Language and Altar Rubrics; and, 3) Charitable Works (see the buttons, above). Like priests and bishops, permanent deacons can be married prior to ordination. Although deacons are not permitted–as are priests and bishops–to consecrate the Eucharist for Holy Communion or to pronounce benedictions, many men love being deacons so much that they choose to forgo further ordinations and remain being diehard Christian keystones, deacons, in their communities.
